When our family decided to pack up and leave South Carolina for Virginia, I had one worry about my new location. Would I be able to find that sweet sleeping spot in our little cabin. This was my number one concern! After all, I’m not a “roughing it kind of dog.” As you know, sleeping is my favorite thing to do.
Leaving behind our old life and former house wasn’t exactly easy on the “family dog” either. I was never asked how I felt about moving. After all, this was the only home I had ever known!
I will never forget the day they brought me home for the first time. They had driven two hours to see me. Lover Darlin’ had found me and my two sisters on the internet. My sisters found homes quickly and I was the only one left. I have often wondered where my sisters ended up. I hope they found good homes too. They were blonde and pretty, but I was the smartest! I was brought out with another sweet, but inferior dog and put in a viewing area to be observed by my new family. I tried to play it cool and not look too desperate.
It was not love at first sight for Lover Darlin’. Yes, that shocked me the first time I heard that. She commented later that she almost backed out of taking me home. Her fear of bringing home a new puppy almost made her doubt if she was doing the right thing. She is obsessive about things being neat and in order. Well, you know how puppies can be! Silly girl, she didn’t realize I was the best dog in the whole world for her and the family. I knew that my good looks and intelligence would win her over eventually.
My Old Sleeping Spots
I grew up in this house and loved it with all my heart. There were numerous “sweet spots” in this house for me. By that I mean, there were certain areas of the house that were my domain and where I felt most comfortable. I was the only one in the house that had three beds! My very first bed was in the laundry room. As a puppy, this was my room. Having a bed in the laundry room meant things always smelled good. No stinky smells here. So many nights, the sounds of the washing machine and dryer became like friends. Their soothing sounds and rhythms would keep me company and lull me to sleep.
The Landing
As I grew and was given more freedom in the house, I got my second bed on the landing at the top of the stairs. This changed my world in great and wonderful ways.
One day a box arrived for me containing that second bed that I loved so much. It was warm and plush and so very cozy! The best part of the landing was I had a view through the windows. That helped me see anything or anyone that got close to our house or front porch. No doorbell was needed when I was on the job. There were so many times I ran down those stairs as part of my security patrol, just making sure everything was as it should be.
There was a dog down our street that I just detested. His name was Hero…that’s such a dumb name for a dog that didn’t have any talent. He really got me riled up walking by our side yard off-leash and I let him know it too.
The Stairs
Another thing that I loved about our stairs was how good they were to sleep on.
I spent many wonderful days lying on those stairs. The mornings were the best. The warm rays of the sun would shine in and I would pick out the best step that had the most sun. It felt so good on my bones. I could sleep there for hours.
Life In The Cabin
I have settled in our little cabin pretty well. Because it is so small, I don’t have three beds anymore. I’m down to just one now. Of course, I have the loveseat that I love so much. It’s my new sweet spot and my favorite! A lot of good sleeping happens on my loveseat.
Yes, there are times I miss my old home and all the space I got to enjoy. I’m also enjoying the small cabin. I feel so much closer to everyone and get way more attention than I did before. I do my best to keep them entertained and provide them with unconditional love and comfort. It’s a tough job, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. They are my best friends. I am happiest when we are all sitting together… on the loveseat…me in between!
Love, Charlie
