After moving to Virginia, I quickly realized there were many beautiful places tucked away on off-beaten paths. The many unpaved, country roads have the most exquisite views that leave you breathless. Consequently, it’s no wonder the state’s slogan is, “Virginia is For Lovers.” Since 1969, this has been a successful slogan for tourism and travel in Virginia.
Living here, I have developed a compulsion to explore those “out-of-the-way places.” I can’t tell you how many times we have stumbled on the most picturesque views down a little unpaved country road. There are gems just waiting to be uncovered. I really love that this area is not well populated. That was one of the main reasons we wanted to live here. We left behind our “blacktop” life of noise, traffic and overpopulation. Here, you feel as though you have all of this beauty to yourself! It’s wonderful!
Exploring a country road
There is a particular country road that we had passed many times on our way home. One particular afternoon, I got that compulsion to explore this country road. My hunch was correct. It was a gorgeous spring day. This winding dirt road ran through the valley flanked by beautiful, green, lush pastures and rolling hills. There were old barns and farmhouses scattered about the landscape. It was a lovely drive and I was so glad we had taken the time to explore it.
As we approached the end of the road, we got to see the most amazing sight. The pasture had beautiful horses and colts just grazing and frolicking without a care in the world. This pretty little spot was a gift! Some of the best gifts don’t come wrapped in pretty paper and ribbon. They are found on rustic, and sometimes forgotten country roads!
