Several years ago, I began thinking about what kind of kitchen sink I would like in the new farmhouse. In my previous post, I lamented my strong dislike for the stainless steel we had in the old house, including the kitchen sink! I realize for some stainless steel is the preferred choice, but I never developed a love for it. In all honesty, I really hated it!
In our new mountain home in Virginia, I wanted a clean slate. Having no interest in replicating our former home’s style, it was important to use different materials and products in our new farmhouse build. After giving it a lot of thought, I just knew I wanted a white cast iron kitchen sink! The retro feel of the cast iron sink just seemed to fit perfectly with the style I was going for.
Farmhouse Sink
Originally, I had my heart set on the apron front farmhouse sink. At the very last minute of the purchase, I totally changed my mind! That has happened to me a number of times through this build. I have learned how important it has been for me to give a lot of thought and consideration on any early choices. By doing so, I don’t make an emotional decision based on trends or what looks fabulous in someone else’s kitchen!
Not only did I change my mind on the apron front sink, but also decided I did not want another under mount sink. My biggest gripe with the last under mount sink was the silicone rim where countertop meets the sink. To me, it always seemed like such a great place for yucky stuff to get trapped! At some point, the silicone seal will eventually break away and become discolored. I never felt like I had a good visual of that particular area, if you know what I mean!
Farmhouse Sink Decisions
When the time came to make a decision about the kitchen sink, I did what made the most sense, I ordered it online! Living in a rural area lends itself to making a lot of purchases online. It’s the perfect solution! From the comfort of our home, with no pressure, I was able to take my time and choose a kitchen sink that I loved. The reviews of others that had purchased the same sink was such a great help. Any questions or concerns I had about this particular sink were answered by the reviews of others.
I chose the Kohler brand, 4-hole cast iron drop-in sink from a plumbing supply store online. It’s a beautiful sink, and I’m so glad I made that last minute change! The curve and feel of the sink is just what I wanted. As for the drop-in aspect, I totally love it. Although the drop-in is a little “old school,” it was the perfect choice for me and my kitchen! No more under mount out of sight food trap weirdness!!
With the cast iron sink, I just knew I wanted something different for the faucet. In my previous kitchen, I had an all-in-one faucet and was ready to make a change for this sink. I immediately fell in love with the Duchess Double Handle Kitchen Faucet with Optional Side Spray from Wayfair! It’s like a beautiful piece of jewelry that I never tire of looking at! If you spend a lot of time at your kitchen sink, that’s pretty important.
Farmhouse Sink Love
There is not one thing about this set that I don’t love. Besides the fact that it is gorgeous, the quality is so much more than I expected. The side spray is heavy! The retro black and white knobs are so sweet!
Finally, after many changes, I have a kitchen sink that I love! I spend so much time in my kitchen, and the sink and faucet are a lovely set that I know I will enjoy for years to come.
If I have learned anything through this process, it would be to choose things that you love! Not because it’s the latest and greatest. Don’t be afraid to choose different products or materials that aren’t necessarily trendy. Decide what makes sense for you and your kitchen and go for it!
Warmest wishes from “my kitchen in progress” to yours,
